Install windows 7 on Virtual Machine

In this article you will learn how to install windows 7 on virtual host so that you can test windows 7 on your old pc without affecting your previous operating system. Installing on virtual host can be a good idea to test windows 7 RC without affecting your previous windows.

Steps to install virtual box.

1. Download virtual box installer for windows from sun microsystem  site.

2. Save the installer on your file system after downloading the insaller.

3. Double click the installer to start installation.

Accept license agreement to continue installing virtual box.

By Default VirutalBox will be installed on your program files directory on you os drive. If you want to change the installation directory click Browse and choose the destination directory.

After providing all the required information for the installation wizard, now its time to actually install the program. Now ready to install. Final step of the wizard.

Installing windows 7 in virtual box

You have completed installing virtual box. On the top of the virtual box you will now install windows 7. Open the virtual box program to start installing windows 7.

Here you are on the virtual box. Create new virtual machine to start installation.

First step of the new virtual machine creation. Just proceed to go for the next step.

Give the name and select the Os type. In this case we choose Windows vista. Till the date Windows 7 is not listed on the virtual box. Os type Windows Vista works fine here.

Set the base memory size. Its good idea to set the half of you actual memory so that your mail os will get half and your virtual host will get half of the actual physical memory. Click Next to continue.

Now the time to provide the virtual hard disk for you virtual host. Virtual Hard disk is a single file on your primary OS. All the files(system files, application files, documents are store by virtual host in this virtual disk(Virtual disk is treated as real hard disk by the os installed on your virtual machine). Click New to create new hard disk or if you have already created you can reuse that.

New windows prompts to create new virtual hard disk. Click next to continue.

Select Dynamically expanding image so that you virtual disk can grow as per needed by your os on your virtual machine. Click Next to continue.

Set the image size of your virtual disk. Set it to 20 GB . its enough for windows 7. Click Next to continue.

Click Finish to create virtual disk for you new OS (Windows 7 that you are going to install on virtual machine).

Now click Next to continue.

Now click Finish to create new virtual machine.

You will see the new entry on your virtual box dashboard. Lets check and change some settings if necessary for new virtual machine. Click On settings button on the toolbar to view settings.

Move to CD/DVD-ROM section. Check if its mounted to your physical CD/DVD-ROM. Or you can mount to the iso file so that your virtual host will treat it as a physical real CD/DVD-ROM. In this example i m mounting to my real CR/DVD Drive.

If you want to mount to ISO file Check the option ISO Image File and browse your iso image file on your harddisk.

Map the iso image of the windows 7 installation disc. This will be treated as a cd.

Go to the General tabs and Check the boot order. The CD ROOM should on the top.

Now your virtual machine is ready to install Windows 7. Select the virtual machine on the Virtual Box ,Click Start and the installation process will begin.
